What Is the Difference Between Tdap and Td for Immigration?
Quick Answer
Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) is required for immigration — not Td (tetanus and diphtheria only). Tdap includes protection against pertussis (whooping cough), which Td does not. A Td booster is not sufficient to satisfy the Tdap requirement for immigration.
Tdap vs. Td: Key Differences
Tdap and Td are both vaccines that protect against tetanus and diphtheria, but they differ in one important way: Tdap also includes protection against pertussis (whooping cough), while Td does not. For immigration purposes, USCIS requires Tdap — not Td. If you have only received Td boosters, you have not satisfied the Tdap requirement and will need to receive a Tdap vaccine.
Why Tdap Is Required for Immigration
ACIP recommends Tdap for all adults who have not previously received it, regardless of when they last received a Td booster. Pertussis (whooping cough) is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can be severe or fatal in infants. USCIS requires Tdap as part of the immigration vaccine requirements to protect public health. Once you have received one dose of Tdap, subsequent boosters can be Td (every 10 years) — but at least one lifetime dose of Tdap is required.
The 10-Year Validity Rule
Tdap and Td vaccines are valid for approximately 10 years. For immigration purposes, if you received Tdap more than 10 years ago, you may need a booster. The civil surgeon will assess whether your Tdap is current based on the date of your last dose. If your Tdap was received within the past 10 years, it is generally considered current and no booster is needed.
What If You Have Never Received Tdap
If you have never received Tdap — for example, if you only received DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) as a child and Td boosters as an adult — you will need one dose of Tdap. Tdap is a single-dose vaccine for adults and adolescents. After receiving Tdap, you are considered current for immigration purposes.
Childhood DTP vs. Adult Tdap
The childhood vaccine DTaP (or DTP in older formulations) is different from the adult Tdap vaccine. DTaP/DTP is given to children under 7 years of age and contains higher doses of diphtheria and pertussis components. Tdap is the adult formulation with reduced doses. Having received DTaP as a child does not satisfy the adult Tdap requirement — adults still need at least one dose of Tdap.
