Kidney Disease Is Not a Ground of Inadmissibility

Chronic kidney disease (CKD), end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and dialysis are not grounds of inadmissibility under U.S. immigration law. The medical grounds of inadmissibility are limited to communicable diseases of public health significance, failure to have required vaccinations, physical or mental disorders with associated harmful behavior, and drug abuse or addiction. Kidney disease does not fall into any of these categories.

Medication Documentation

If you take medications for kidney disease — such as phosphate binders, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, blood pressure medications, or others — bring a complete list of your current medications to your appointment. This helps the civil surgeon accurately document your medical history on Form I-693.

Vaccine Schedule Considerations for Immunocompromised Patients

Patients with advanced kidney disease or those on dialysis may have altered immune responses. Some patients with kidney disease are on immunosuppressant medications, particularly if they have received a kidney transplant.

If you are on immunosuppressant medications, some live vaccines may be contraindicated. The civil surgeon will review your vaccination requirements in the context of your current medications and health status. If a vaccine is medically contraindicated, a medical waiver can be documented on Form I-693.

No Special Restrictions

There are no special restrictions or additional immigration requirements for applicants with kidney disease. You will complete the same standard immigration medical examination as any other applicant. If you are on dialysis, you may wish to schedule your appointment on a non-dialysis day if possible, as you may feel more comfortable.
