Ukrainian Parolee Green Card Eligibility

Ukrainian nationals who fled the Russian invasion of Ukraine were admitted to the United States under the Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) humanitarian parole program. Ukrainian parolees who are eligible for a green card — for example, through a family petition or other immigration pathway — must file Form I-485 to adjust status.

Ukrainian parolees who file I-485 must complete the standard immigration medical examination as part of the adjustment of status process.

Medical Exam Requirement

All I-485 applicants, including Ukrainian parolees, must complete an immigration medical examination with a USCIS-designated civil surgeon and submit Form I-693. The medical exam requirement applies regardless of how you entered the United States.

Ukrainian parolees did not undergo a standard overseas medical exam before entering the United States, so a full civil surgeon examination is required.

Ukrainian Vaccination Records and What's Accepted

Ukraine has a well-developed vaccination program, and many Ukrainian parolees have vaccination records. Ukrainian vaccination records (often called "щеплення" or vaccination booklets) are accepted by civil surgeons. If your records are in Ukrainian, the civil surgeon can review them with translation assistance.

Bring your Ukrainian vaccination records to the exam appointment. Having documented vaccinations can reduce the number of vaccines you need at the appointment.

TB Testing

All I-485 applicants must be tested for TB as part of the immigration medical exam. Ukraine has a higher TB prevalence than the United States, so TB testing is an important part of the exam for Ukrainian parolees.

If your TB test is positive, the civil surgeon will order a chest X-ray. A positive TB test does not automatically disqualify you from obtaining a green card, but you may need to complete treatment.

Practical Tips

Bring your Form I-94, passport, Ukrainian vaccination records, and any other relevant medical records to the appointment. If your records are in Ukrainian, you can bring a translation or ask the civil surgeon's office about translation assistance.

If you need language assistance (Ukrainian or Russian), contact the civil surgeon's office in advance. Many civil surgeon offices can accommodate language needs.
