Cuban Adjustment Act Overview

The Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966 allows Cuban nationals who have been admitted or paroled into the United States and have been physically present for at least one year to apply for lawful permanent residence. Cuban nationals who meet the eligibility requirements file Form I-485 to adjust status.

The Cuban Adjustment Act has been a significant pathway for Cuban nationals to obtain green cards in the United States.

Medical Exam Requirement

All I-485 applicants, including Cuban Adjustment Act applicants, must complete an immigration medical examination with a USCIS-designated civil surgeon and submit Form I-693. The medical exam requirement applies regardless of the basis for the I-485 application.

Cuban nationals who entered the United States without a prior overseas medical exam must complete a full civil surgeon examination.

What the Exam Covers

The immigration medical exam covers a complete physical examination, tuberculosis testing, required laboratory tests, and a vaccination review. The civil surgeon will administer any missing required vaccines.

There are no special medical requirements for Cuban Adjustment Act applicants. The exam is the same as for any other I-485 applicant.

Cuban Vaccination Records

Cuba has a comprehensive vaccination program, and many Cuban nationals have vaccination records. Bring your Cuban vaccination records (carnet de vacunación or similar) to the exam appointment. Having documented vaccinations can reduce the number of vaccines you need.

If your records are in Spanish, the civil surgeon can review them. If you do not have vaccination records, the civil surgeon can administer the required vaccines at the appointment.

TB Testing for Cuban Applicants

Cuba has a higher TB prevalence than the United States. All I-485 applicants must be tested for TB. If your TB test is positive, the civil surgeon will order a chest X-ray.

A positive TB test does not automatically disqualify you from obtaining a green card, but you may need to complete treatment.

Practical Tips

Bring your Form I-94 or other entry documents, passport or other identity documents, Cuban vaccination records, and any relevant medical records. If you need language assistance (Spanish), contact the civil surgeon's office in advance. Many civil surgeon offices can accommodate Spanish-speaking patients.
