What Is a Conditional Green Card?

If you obtained your green card through marriage and the marriage was less than two years old when your green card was approved, USCIS grants you a conditional permanent residence card valid for two years. To remove the conditions and obtain a permanent (10-year) green card, you must file Form I-751 (Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence) within the 90-day window before your conditional green card expires.

The I-751 process focuses on demonstrating that your marriage is bona fide — that it was entered into in good faith and not solely for immigration benefits. It is not a new adjustment of status application, and it does not trigger a new medical exam requirement.

Is Form I-693 Required for I-751?

No. Form I-751 does not require Form I-693 or a new immigration medical examination. USCIS does not include a medical exam as part of the I-751 petition process. The health-related admissibility determination was made when your initial green card was approved, and it is not re-evaluated through I-751.

When Would a New Medical Exam Be Required?

A new immigration medical exam would be required if your conditional green card expired and you were required to file a new I-485 adjustment of status application. This could occur if USCIS denied your I-751 petition and you needed to re-apply for permanent residence through a different pathway.

A new exam might also be required if USCIS issued a Request for Evidence (RFE) in connection with a new adjustment application, or if you were required to appear for removal proceedings and then sought adjustment of status as a defense.

You will not be asked to complete a medical exam at or before this interview.
