What Advance Parole Is

Advance parole is a travel document that allows certain noncitizens to travel outside the United States and return without abandoning their pending immigration applications. It is issued on Form I-131 and is commonly used by I-485 applicants who need to travel internationally while their green card application is pending.

Advance parole is not a visa — it is a permission to re-enter the United States as a parolee. It does not change your immigration status or affect your pending I-485 application, as long as you return before the document expires.

Why No Medical Exam Is Required

The immigration medical exam (Form I-693) is required as part of the I-485 adjustment of status process to establish that you are not inadmissible on medical grounds. Advance parole is simply a travel document — it does not involve a new admissibility determination.

USCIS does not require Form I-693 for Form I-131 applications. The medical exam requirement is specific to the I-485 process, not to travel authorization.

How Advance Parole Interacts With Your I-485 and I-693

If you have a pending I-485 and have already completed your medical exam, your I-693 remains valid while you travel on advance parole. Traveling outside the United States does not reset or invalidate your I-693.

However, if you travel and your I-693 expires while you are abroad, you will need to complete a new exam upon your return. Plan your travel carefully to ensure your I-693 remains valid throughout your I-485 processing period.

Traveling While Your I-693 Is Pending

If you have completed your medical exam but have not yet received your sealed I-693, you can still travel on advance parole. The civil surgeon will hold your sealed I-693 until you return. Contact your civil surgeon before traveling to confirm the status of your I-693 and make arrangements for pickup upon your return.

Returning From Travel and Your Pending Exam

When you return to the United States on advance parole, you re-enter as a parolee. This does not affect your pending I-485 or your I-693. You can pick up your sealed I-693 from the civil surgeon and submit it to USCIS as planned.

If you have not yet completed your medical exam when you return, you can schedule it after your return. There is no requirement to complete the exam before traveling.

What to Do If Your I-693 Expires While Abroad

If your I-693 expires while you are outside the United States, you will need to complete a new exam after returning. The two-year validity period runs from the civil surgeon's signature date.
